A dishwasher is a great appliance to add to your kitchen as it saves you a lot of time when doing dishes. If you take the time to keep your dishwasher clean and well-maintained, you can continue to use it for years to come. If you have a large family and run the dishwasher a lot, it will pay to have these maintenance tips handy.
1. Keep it Clean
While it might seem a little crazy – you do have to keep the machine responsible for keeping your dishes clean clean as well. Failure to keep the inside of the dishwasher clean will make it harder and harder for it to do its job. Eventually, it isn't going to clean your dishes at all.
You should scrape the plates into the trash can to stop a large buildup of food from getting in the drain and gasket. Wipe the gasket off when you clean and clean out the trap that does hold onto the bits of food that won't come off in the prewashing. Make sure you wipe along the bottom of the door where food can collect without you realizing it.
Check the spinning arms to make sure the holes in them are free of food. You can also clean the outside of the dishwasher with a disinfectant and a rag. This is important because the dishwasher is in the line of fire of food prep and can get dirty before you know it. Sometimes you don't get rid of the bacteria and food particles that can end up there with just a quick swipe.
Baking soda and vinegar are great natural cleaners to run through the dishwasher by themselves to clean and sterilize everything. You can also purchase dishwasher cleaner from the store.
2. Run it Weekly
It's not good for your dishwasher to sit without being used for long periods of time. You need to try and run it at least once a week to keep everything lubricated and help keep leaks from happening over time. Naturally, you also do not want to overwork the machine either. You want to give the dishwasher a break in between cleanings so that it can rest and dry out before you start the next round. It's a good idea if you do use it a lot during a short period of time to leave the door open for a bit and wipe it down.
As you can see, the biggest thing to worry about with maintaining your dishwasher is keeping it clean. A clean dishwasher is a happy dishwasher.
